Celebrating in the city
Make the most of Perth’s warm, sunny weather by getting outdoors on Christmas Day. There’s plenty of space for celebrations and exploration.
Picnic in the park
The City is full of beautiful green spaces. So get your friends and family to pack up some food to share and meet up in one of Perth’s best picnic spots to share some Christmas cheer. You can enjoy the fresh air and sunshine, and have plenty of space for everyone to play. And best of all, there’s no host stuck with a house to clean up afterwards.
My tips? Head to Matilda Bay Reserve where you can paddle in the shallow water and look out for dolphins during a brunch picnic. Find a shady spot in Stirling Gardens for lunch. Or lay out your rug at Kings Park in the late afternoon to enjoy views of the city lighting up as the sun goes down over the Swan River.
Explore after darkThe Rio Tinto Christmas Lights Trail will be sparkling from 6pm, and it’s the perfect way to walk off that Christmas indulgence. The full trail, featuring 22 light installations, winds from Northbridge Piazza through the Perth Cultural Centre, Yagan Square, Forrest Place, and the Murray and Hay Street Malls down to Elizabeth Quay. There’s also a short “Merry Mile” route covering 15 highlights in an hour – perfect for little legs. You’ll be able to snap selfies with amazing after-dark artworks including Australian animals and a chilled-out summer Santa. Download the trail map here (an accessible version is available too).
