Where to find vegan wine at bars in Perth

This classy marble-floored venue isn’t the sort of place you’d expect vegans to be welcome. With its high ceilings, classic bentwood chairs, and corporate-chic vibe, it seems like the home of high-income guests eating steaks and caviar - but thankfully, this expectation is incorrect. When I asked about their selection of vegan wines, they let me know that they actually had a wide range available.

“We don’t go looking for them as such, but as vegan wines tend to be ones that have not undergone fining in the winemaking process, we find that many of the minimal intervention styles we prefer are also happily suitable for vegans.” David Gillman, Heritage Wine Bar. 

With their wines, the staff find out if they are vegan based on the label or by checking with the producer to see if they use animal products during the fining process. 

Heritage Wine Bar also has a bottle shop and online store, and there’s an entire category online for their vegan offerings. This makes it easy for staff to assist vegan customers, as they can simply check the online store to see whether certain wines are vegan. So, you don’t have to feel nervous asking the staff, there are options available, you just need to check.

Tiny’s

Sometimes, as a vegan or vegetarian, it’s a relief when you don’t have to choose a venue with major hippie vibes. Don’t get me wrong, I love places with flourishing plants, multi-coloured wall murals, and reclaimed wood furniture, but sometimes it’s nice to try something different. And Tiny’s is one of those places - a hip CBD venue, filled with warm wooden features, smooth booths, and a sleek bar highlighted by reflective gold panels. 

The sommelier at Tiny’s told me that about 70% of their wines are vegan. The menu doesn’t state which ones, but you’re welcome to ask. There’s always a sommelier on shift that can come over and walk you through the offerings. And the staff understand the winemaking process and what makes a wine vegan, so they can give reliable advice on which ones are safe for you to indulge in.

The Stables

Now, this one I found the most surprising - of all the bar websites I checked, The Stables was the only one that listed whether wines were vegan on their menu. Considering the casual pub style and specialty ‘house-cured meats’ of this large inner-city venue, it’s leaps and bounds ahead of the pack. And it’s not just one token vegan option on the wine list either, there’s multiple per section. 

There’s a ‘v’ next to each vegan wine, with a range of prices and varieties available. Some by-the-glass whites are the Leeuwin Estate riesling, Vasse Felix premier SB, and the McHenry Hohnen Rocky Road chardonnay. In the reds there is the Leeuwin Estate Siblings shiraz and the Cirillo ‘The Vincent’ grenache. This menu is so detailed, it can almost be used to discover what local vineyards offer vegan wine options!
