Wellington SquareAfter a massive transformation, Wellington Square in East Perth is a family-friendly hub of activity, featuring picnic areas, a dog park, and heaps of play space suitable for kids of all ages - including funky colourful basketball courts (one full and one half court). With plenty of shade to cool off in plus amenities like toilets, barbecues and water fountains, you could hang here for hours.
Donnie TacoA Mexican-inspired outdoor cafe slash basketball venue, Donnie Taco sure has a unique lil’ niche! Their menu features tacos, nachos and toasties (plus Mary Street Bakery treats and La Paleta ice creams… mmmm), and they’re even licensed so there’s a small range of beer, wine, cider and spirits. But back on the topic of basketball courts: they offer one-hour free hire of their half-court during their opening hours. Book via their website.
Mardalup ParkOn the banks of the Swan River with stunning views across the water to Optus Stadium, Mardalup Park is a hidden gem in East Perth. Along with a full court it has a playground, exercise equipment and barbecues. There’s also an array of cafes, restaurants and bars within a couple of minutes’ walk, clustered around peaceful Claisebrook Cove.
Elizabeth QuayConveniently located right next to the bus and train station, and even ferries, the public basketball court at Elizabeth Quay couldn’t be easier to get to. Plus, it’s a prime position next to the water, with plenty of food and drink options available - fuel up with V Burger Bar (one of Perth’s best burger joints) or Gusto Gelato (one of - you guessed it - Perth’s best gelato places) after playing on the full-sized court.
A small inner-city park, Weld Square has a half court (plus table tennis, a playground and more), not far from the endless eatery options of Northbridge.
With all these unique options and heaps more to do while you’re in the city, gather a group and make your weekend plans a slam dunk!
