Finding the right fit
Warning: just because a show is about Harry Potter doesn’t mean it’s appropriate for kids. This is Fringe we’re talking about - home of the weird and wonderful. Luckily, every show has details of age appropriateness listed on the Fringe website, along with a ‘Kleenheat Sizzle Factor’ rating, from ‘Mild’ to ‘Very Hot’ (which is especially helpful in the case of adults-only shows to give you an idea of whether it’s the kind of thing you’d want to see with your parents)! Use the filters when searching the Fringe What’s On page to narrow down your options by suitability and sizzle factor.
Fringe shows for kids
There are plenty of shows for children at Fringe, spanning comedy, circus, magic, theatre and more. Take the kids to a show like the award-winning Bubble Show with Mini Milkshake or A One Man Circus at The Pleasure Garden and make it a thoroughly special afternoon with face painting from the Freedom Fairies and a glimpse of the real, live FRINGE WORLD Mermaids!
A Royal Dance Party is a chance for little princes and princesses to sing and dance with their favourite movie characters, while Best of Comedy Lounge For Kids will have older children in stitches.
Fringe shows for tweens and teens
Got a bigger kid who needs something to do these holidays? Send them to learn some new skills with an interactive workshop like I'm Boooored (a fast-paced improv session with the Australian Institute of Theatresports), the Class Clowns Crash Course (where they can have a go at stand-up comedy), or Abracadabra and Other Useless Magic Words (a class on the subtle psychology and sleek practice of performing magic).
The Confessional Kids and Parents is a comedy show you can all enjoy together, with stand-up comics riffing off audience confessions and giving Tim Tams as rewards.
Fringe shows for adults (that aren’t too risqué)
Thinking of introducing your parents or grandparents to Fringe this year? While you might want to avoid a raunchy burlesque show, there are plenty of options that you could enjoy with Dad or Gran.
Treat them to a tribute show to their favourite band or singer (like A Boy Named Cash: Johnny Cash Experience, Come Away With Me - A Norah Jones Tribute, Neil Diamond & His Songs or Girls Gone ABBA - The Sounds of Mamma Mia!)
Take them to sample their favourite tipple at Brewed Laughter | Beer tasting with a Comedian, Uncorked Comedy | Wine tasting with a Comedian, or Booze School – Old Young’s Cocktail Class!
Or choose a performance with a mild or medium Kleenheat Sizzle Factor, like the award-winning acrobatics of A Simple Space or a laugh-inducing line-up of Best of the Fringe - Comedy Superstars.
A family adventure
While you’re out and about, why not take the Experience Perth Family Tour to get to know the city better? The Peddle Perth team will take you on a fun and educational rickshaw ride, complete with a scavenger hunt for the kids to complete.
