For four nights only this September, Elizabeth Quay will become a giant open-air canvas as a towering water screen rises from the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River) for The Story of Kooyar, a free nighttime experience for all ages.

Delivered in partnership with the Western Australian Government, through Tourism WA, the immersive experience brings a Noongar story to life through animation, light and an original soundscape, with Kooyar (frog) journeying through the six seasons as black cockatoos sweep across the water, waterways flow and wildflowers burst into bloom.

The story has been carried across generations by Whadjuk Noongar storyteller and cultural consultant Rose Walley and brought into vivid contemporary form through the work of her niece, acclaimed Whadjuk Noongar artist Biara Martin.

The Story of Kooyar is a 20 minute experience running continuously from 7pm to 10pm, so visitors can arrive at their leisure.

Across Elizabeth Quay, the evening will also feature roving Karak (red-tailed black cockatoo) puppets, bringing playful large-scale puppetry and visual storytelling into the crowd. Live performances by Indigenous dance group Corroboree For Life will add another dimension to the evening, sharing First Nations culture and storytelling through dance and music.
