Perth Jazz Festival presents Jon Hunt with WAAPA and Ray Walker Nonet
Two generations of jazz artistry unite in this special double bill, celebrating the future and legacy of Western Australian jazz – from rising stars nurtured by WAAPA to jazz heavyweight Ray Walker, named a State Cultural Treasure in 2024.
WAAPA’s New Orleans Ensemble delivers an infectious celebration of traditional jazz, bringing the sounds of Louis Armstrong and the great New Orleans pioneers to life. Led by Ricki Malet and joined by Melbourne saxophonist Jon Hunt, expect swing, soul and irresistible grooves. Hunt has performed with Paul Kelly, Lauryn Hill and Vince Giordano, and is recognised as one of Australia’s leading jazz musicians.
Set 2 features the Ray Walker Nonet, performing original compositions by celebrated guitarist/composer Ray Walker. Performing The Common Ground Suite, a major work composed more than 30 years ago and recently recorded by the ABC. Performed by an all-star ensemble, this is a unique opportunity to experience a significant piece of WA jazz history brought to life.
