The Out Of The Ordinary marks the culmination of 50 extraordinary years of Judith's art practice.
“This exhibition is the culmination of 50 years of my art practice. It will center around the simple daily things people do or did that resonate with so much meaning. It is these rituals that I am particularly interested in; through sketching, I have documented the interactions between people, the way they sit, wait, talk, interact with other animals, including their pets and socialise together. I make a daily practice of thinking through drawing, employing it for everything from the more traditional development of ideas to documenting the interplay between patients and carers in hospital to the decline of elderly inhabitants of care homes. This allows me to illustrate my thought process against the broad visual backdrop of the participants in my life and the places I have inhabited. I am particularly interested in items that are primarily used by women, and I have documented many of them. The symbolism of the sewing machine pulls us back to a time when parents made clothes for their children, and some children even made clothes for themselves. There are also reflections on family life and female (motherly) duties. My paintings depict domestic objects both as a reference to their use and a commentary on the aspirations of their owners and the traditionally masculine machinery they mimicked.” Judith Forrest
