SlowTV | Makuru

Makuru (June – July) is one of the Noongar six seasons, and represents the coldest time of the year. SlowTV: Makuru brings us beautiful nature footage from across Noongar country to tune in to the changes in our environment that the season brings. This program is a collection of slow nature footage taken down in the Serpentine National Park, in Gnaala Karla Boodja.

The vivid beauty and life of Perth’s natural wonders are paired with small pieces of information found on the KURONGKURL KATITJIN page of the ECU website.

The Mavis Phillips (nee Walley) Collection.

The Perth Centre for Photography in partnership with CAN, and the State Library of WA present a unique collection of Aboriginal photographs taken by one of Australia's earliest photographers - the Mavis Phillips (nee Walley) Collection.

Through her box brownie camera, Mavis captured the everyday moments of her community in Goomalling, Western Australia from the 1930s.

Her photographs capture joy, spontaneity, pride and hope from the thriving Wheatbelt Aboriginal community. The photos are extremely rare in that they capture daily life from a Noongar perspective.

In 2015 Mavis’ daughter Dallas Phillips brought a collection of old negatives stored in a chocolate tin to a photo sharing session run by Community Arts Network. The photos were taken by her late mother and bequeathed to Dallas. She was unaware of their historical and cultural value until they were viewed by State Library staff. This exhibition at the Perth Centre for Photography is curated by Mavis' daughter Dallas Phillips and presents more than sixty of her mother’s photographs.

Minyma Wiru Tjuta | All the Lovely Ladies

Minyma Wiru Tjuta: All the Lovely Ladies is a celebration of the art and stories of three generations of women living in the remote community of Kalka in the Tomkinson Ranges of South and Western Australia. It is also a recognition of the joy and companionship that coming together to paint brings whilst being in the same space and telling stories of family, country and everyday life through their paintings.

The international exhibited Pitjantjatjara and Ngaanyatjarra artists from the Ninuku Studio have developed a diversity of styles in which they tell their traditional stories of country and everyday life in the community. Nunuku Arts is a wholly Aboriginal owned art centre founded in 2006.

This digital presentation of the exhibition Minyma Wiru Tjuta All the Lovely Ladies is made possible with the kind assistance of Artitja Fine Art. Established in 2004 Artitja Fine Art are specialists in Australian Aboriginal art from remote and regional desert communities

Maruku Arts | Central and Western Deserts

For over 30 years Maruku has operated as a not-for-profit art and craft corporation, owned and operated by Anangu. Maruku, literally means “belonging to black”. This is because Maruku is owned and operated by Anangu (Aboriginal people from the Western and Central Deserts of Australia). Approximately 900 Aboriginal artists belonging to over 20 remote communities, make up the collective that is Maruku.
Keeping Culture strong! Maruku assists Anangu to keep their culture strong, by doing punu trips, being part of traditional inmas, assist elders and to teach the younger generation.
