It’s no secret that a fresh cocktail or a warming glass of red goes down an absolute treat on a Friday or Saturday night. Or any night of the week to be honest. What makes it so exciting is the combo of the sweet weekend feels, combined with good drinks and good vibes. But, when you throw in the element of surprise, well, that’s where things get very interesting. And very cool. From roaring 20’s themed speakeasys to late night cocktails behind a fridge door, and golden tickets into a 1970s party, there’s some seriously cool spots around Perth that may be hidden away right under your nose. We’ve rounded them all up for you to suss out.
Toots is Perth’s newest mystery. To clarify, it’s a good kind of mystery – if not the best one out there. A cool and funky secret bar within a bar, you’ll want to put your dancing shoes on for this one. Once you’ve sussed out the location (we aren’t telling you where – it’s all part of the surprise!), head up to the (main) bar, ask ‘Is Toots in?’ and voila, you’ve got yourself a golden ticket into the best night of your life. Grab yourself $10 shots or opt for something worth savouring a little more: the Flying Grasshopper cocktail is a perfect way to top the night off, with vodka, white chocolate, mint, Fernet Branca, cream, and Oreo crumbs. Delish.
There aren’t many convenience stores out there that double as a secret bar. That’s why Convenients, in the heart of Northbridge, is so exciting for us Perthies. Whether you’re heading in to top up on some red bull and grab a bag of chips, or you’re going in for a late-night boogie, you’ll be all set here. Cleverly tucked away behind fridge doors in an actual convenience store on Lake Street, Convenients serves up awesome live tunes and specials throughout the week. Grab 2-for-1 burgers on Tuesday nights… go on, you deserve it.
The infamous Sneaky Tony’s is a snazzy speakeasy tucked away on an alley somewhere in Chinatown. In an unsuspecting little building hidden behind a huge door, you’ll find booths with decadent melting candles on the walls, plus an incredible wall full of all the spirits you could ever want and need. Settle in with a bowl of bar snacks and one of the incredible cocktails whipped up by the mysterious bartenders. All you need to do to get in knock on the door, and when they open up the iron grille, give the secret password… which changes each day. Go back in time and put on your best flapper dress for this one: it’s going to be a wild night.
Bring the snazz and get ready for some jazz as you head underground to Pooles Temple: a sleek and sophisticated bar beneath the State Buildings. Inspired by Paris in the late 19th century, you’ll find a delectable menu bursting with bubbles, fresh oysters and crisp martinis. The many mirrors on the wall will make you wonder if you’ve tumbled down into Wonderland, and you can pair the cool vibes with caviar service and a drink. P.S., there’s a deliciously gooey croque monsieur with bechamel on the menu.
