Tread for Ed and Family Day
Tread for Ed and Family Day
A legacy of strength - Eddy’s Story.
In 2014, Eddy Cionci was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) at 79 years old. The news was shocking for a man who had always been active and full of life. Despite enduring the challenges of chemotherapy, fatigue, and the loss of independence, Eddy faced his battle with resilience and the love of his family. A meaningful trip to Italy during his illness became a cherished memory, strengthening their bond. Eddy passed away in 2017 at the age of 82, but his legacy lives on. His family remains committed to raising awareness and funding research, determined to make a difference for others facing leukaemia.
Why awareness and research matter
- Every day, 55 people in Australia are diagnosed with blood cancer.
- Leukaemia is one of the most common childhood cancers but also affects adults of all ages.
- Advancements in treatment have improved survival rates, but more research is needed to find better, less toxic therapies and, ultimately, a cure.
Why we’re walking
This charity walk event aims to raise both essential funds and awareness for leukaemia, and other types of blood cancer that affects many Australians. Through participation and donations, we honour Eddy while supporting those who are currently facing this disease.
