The History of the Pride Parade

Join us for a panel discussion delivered in partnership with Pride WA and WestPride Archives as part of Pridefest this November.

The first Pride March was held on 20 October 1990, when 200 members of the Stonewall Union of Students—later Pride WA—rallied from Supreme Court Gardens to the Cultural Centre. It marked the anniversary of the 1989 Parliament House Rally, which helped lead to the decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1990. Pride began as a defiant stand against systemic violence and exclusion, led by those who demanded freedom and dignity.

35 years on, join us for a free panel discussion reflecting on the parade’s history and highlights, with firsthand stories from LGBTQIA+ community members who were there.
