The Groove Merchants: Tessie Overmyer Plays Thad Jones

Tessie Overmyer (NSW) features alongside WAYJO's Wednesday Night Orchestra playing music of late great big band composer and band leader Thad Jones to celebrate the 100th anniversary of his birth.

Tessie Overmyer is a rising star in the Sydney jazz scene. A fiery young saxophonist with a maturity of playing well beyond her years. In 2020 and 2021, Tessie was selected to play lead alto in the Australian National Youth Jazz Orchestra and plays lead alto with the Sydney Conservatorium Jazz Orchestra.

Thad’s music combines the swingin’ foot tappin’ sensibility of the Count Basie band with the style and harmonic sophistication of Duke Ellington.
