Lunch and Learn with Professor David Mackey

COVID-19, lockdown and increased screen use are all factors in worsening eyesight in our children.

Over the last 50 years an epidemic in myopia (short-sightedness) in young adults has been documented in the cities of Asia. Research has shown that myopia is due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Education, near work and lack of time outdoors are well documented associations. The COVID-19 related lockdowns disrupted education for 1.5 billion children around the world.

Recent studies out of China, Hong Kong and Europe have shown a rise in rates of myopia in primary school children over the last year. While the lockdown in Perth was brief, Melbourne had the longest in the world. There is a likely wave of myopia coming in Australia.

Bring your lunch and meet Professor David Mackey, an ophthalmologist and researcher at the Lions Eye Institute (and genetics expert), for his presentation “Inside, Outside.
How lockdown has exacerbated the risk for short-sightedness in children."
