Karrakatta Club Dinner - Slice Girls
The Karrakatta Club is the oldest private Club for Women in Australia, and located in a beautiful old building opposite the Elizabeth Quay. We are open from Tuesday to Friday and invite the public to our informative and inspiring events.
We hold weekly Lyceum presentations on every Tuesday, covering the following four topics:
- Literary – Week 1
- General – Week 2
- Artistic – Week 3
- Travel – Week 4
In addition, we hold a monthly lunch and dinner where we have presentations on various topics relevant to contemporary society, that question and activate audiences of all ages.
Slice Girls by Dr Joan Arakkal is presented at our next Club Dinner.
Slice Girls is a book about Dr Arakkal’s experience as a female surgeon. Along with her serious message about the importance of modernising orthopaedics she takes us through her travels, joys and tribulations as a surgeon in a male dominated specialty. With 96% of orthopaedic surgeons in Australia being men, the book powerfully poses the question—while women are ready for surgery, is surgery ready for women?
Dr Arakkal will discuss her journey for change to the governance structure that work against women.
