Noongar art is different to every other style of Indigenous art due to historical factors that began with colonisation.
Esther McDowell / Yabini Kickett is a Noongar woman with ties to Ballardong, Nyaki-Nyaki, Wadjuk and Bibbulmun clan groups. As an emerging multidisciplinary arts practitioner, she is committed to tackling misconceptions in relation to her role as a young Aboriginal artist. In this talk, Esther will discuss how she began taking herself seriously as an independent artist and address some of the hurdles she continuously works through in her career.About Esther McDowell / Yabini Kickett
Esther / Yabini is an emerging multidisciplinary Bibbulmun artist based North of Perth. Her work focuses in on portraiture, endemic plant and fungal species to Bibbulmun country, and stories from her family. Esther was a 2017 participant in the Wesfarmers National Indigenous Arts Leadership program in Canberra, has artwork involved in the new Perth Airport rebranding and most recently undertook a residency at the Art Gallery of WA in early 2019.
