His Majesty's Theatre - A Silent Murder
His Majesty's Theatre - A Silent Murder
In 1927, the ‘Jazz Singer’, staring Al Jolson, sent the cinema going public into a frenzy when it featured certain scenes with synchronised sound for the first time! It heralded the end of the silent movie era and the ‘Talkies’ were born.
One year later ‘Terror’, a murder mystery set in an English country house, became the very first film to be totally ‘with sound’. In 1928, Australia saw over 185million film goers attend cinemas - a record that has never been surpassed.
Historic fact: In 1928/29, Australia produced its first 'Talkie' “Showgirls Luck”. We have used this historic fact to create 'A Silent Murder'. Stars from the American & British film industry have been encouraged to make the journey down under and, together with existing Perth based talent, set a date to commence filming. Having arrived by boat into Fremantle the assembled Western Australia team met at His Majesty’s Theatre in Perth to attend the inaugural script reading and a gala dinner. The ‘Silent Movie’ would be dead forever…and so would some of the stars!
