From Another View Creative Fellowship Exhibition

The State Library of WA in partnership with the Minderoo Foundation presents a contemporary reimagination project of John Forrest’s 1874 trek from Geraldton to Adelaide from 7 May.
At Gallery Central, creative responses to exploration and living on Country by Aboriginal Creative Fellows from Yamaji Country, Western Desert and Ngaanyatjarra Lands alongside Queensland artist Bill Gannon.
Yamaji Art in Geraldton will focus on traditional cultural knowledge of water and water sources considering John Forrest relied on Aboriginal trackers and Yamaji peoples’ knowledge to locate water.
Tjukurba Art Gallery at Wiluna represent the Western Desert region focussing on landscape and foods in their area at the start of the Canning Stock Route.
Wilurarra Creative, based in Warburton, share the experience of being on country through the unique perspective of Ngaanyatjarra young people. Walking between two worlds, of traditional Ngaanyatjarra culture and contemporary Australia, Ngaanyatjarra young people maintain an unbroken and continuous knowledge of and connection to the lands that John Forrest could only study.
Creative Fellow Bill Gannon, a non-Indigenous artist, visited sites along the historical trek in 2018. Part of the field work was guided by Traditional Owners and led to works in response to the history and themes of the trek.
The exhibitions span three sites: The State Library (7 May – 19 July 2019), Gallery Central, North Metro TAFE (30 May – 22 June 2019) and Museum of Geraldton (1–26 July 2019). Gallery Central and the Museum of Geraldton will host the creative responses to exploration and living on Country, and include Queensland artist Bill Gannon and Aboriginal Creative Fellows from Yamaji Country, Western Desert and Ngaanyatjarra Lands.
