Everyone can do something ‘if only to fill the ink bottles’ - The Karrakatta Club Story
Come rewind the clock and hear the story of the Karrakatta’s Club’s place in the history of Western Australia.
Operating for more than a century, it is the oldest club for women in Australia, with its founding roots in advocacy for women and social issues. The club was created from a desire to educate and inform women during a time of great social restraints. It continues to flourish as a place of enrichment and knowledge-sharing for women of all ages and their guests.
Founded on a view that anything that educated an enabled women also tended to strengthen men and the community, the Karrakatta Club continues to be guided by its motto, Spectemur Agendo — Let us be judged by our actions — which was proposed by founding member Edith Cowan AO JP, Australia's first female parliamentarian and great social reformer.
At this heritage presentation, Dr Williams will share some of the stories of Karrakatta Club and enable you to come face-to-face with its history. This includes exploring the far-sighted initiatives from many distinguished members in the areas of health care, children's advocacy and support for returning soldiers. A history that helped shape Western Australia.
With worldwide Connections fostered through its membership of International Lyceum Clubs the Karrakatta Club has flourished for the past 129 years continually adding to its heritage, story and benefits.
