Perth's Best Laid Back Eats

I’ve been covering the Perth food scene as a food writer and critic for nearly 5 years. When I arrived from London the city was starting to break away from a reputation as a culinary backwater. Now it’s scene is positively burgeoning, drawing in young talent from the eastern states and big international names choosing to make landfall in WA before heading elsewhere. There’s a mix of culinary styles at play, but all have Perth’s sense that laid-back is best.
Petition Kitchen
State Buildings, St Georges Tce &, Barrack St, Perth
Also found in the State Buildings, Petition Kitchen lured young chef Jesse Blake to Perth from Cumulus Inc. in Melbourne; where he was sous chef in the Andrew McConnell flagship. On the West Coast, Jesse has carved a reputation quickly for unpretentious food across the three menus at Petition (Kitchen, Beer Corner and Wine Store). Open from breakfast until late, Jesse is dialled into some of the state’s best producers, meaning you get a true taste of WA.
Long Chim
State Buildings, St Georges Tce &, Barrack St, Perth
Lulu La Delizia
5/97 Rokeby Rd, Subiaco
There’s carb loading and then there’s a visit to Lulu La Delizia. Joel Valvasori-Pereza was previously at CBD favourite Lalla Rookh, where he built a name for his spins on classic Italian. Lulu is not just Joel’s first solo venture as chef-owner, it’s an all together more intimate offering. His focus is specialty handmade pasta, a small menu that changes regularly and creating an atmosphere that is every inch the neighbourhood joint that everyone wants.
Billie H
34 St Quentin Ave, Claremont
Alia Glorie is a name to watch in the Australian food scene. One time sous chef at Beaufort Street hotspot El Publico she’s now at the helm of this Claremont eatery, which has quickly earned a name for itself. Lauded nationally as a chef with imagination, Billie H is the perfect spot to order big, albeit across a number of smaller plates. Match it with their impressive wine list and this could be a quick bite, or somewhere to settle in to.
Shorehouse
278 Marine Parade, Swanbourne
You can’t come to Perth and not head to the beach. Shorehouse for me is one of the must-visits in coastal dining. On opening it seemingly became an instant classic at Swanbourne Beach with a menu that speaks of WA’s best produce, whether it’s from the land or sea. Shorehouse is welcoming, accessible and in keeping with WA’s laidback coastal vibe. In a city that gets more sunshine than any other capital where else would you want to be?
