Catch the ferry to Perth Zoo
Perth is home to one of the oldest zoos in the country, and also one of the most beautiful. Situated in South Perth, Perth Zoo is a very short and enjoyable ferry ride from Perth CBD across the stunning Swan River. Once you’re there, you’ll see that the zoo boasts more than 150 exotic and native species of animals from all over the world – plus, you can even hire wagons to cart the family around in case all the walking around is too much for little legs, and there are also spots for parents to grab a coffee.
Visit Scitech
If your kids are into science, then take them to West Perth’s Scitech Discovery Centre. Scitech is a not-for-profit organisation that aims to increase interest in science, technology, engineering and maths. There are loads of innovative and interactive museums for kids to get involved in, as well as exhibits that change throughout the year.
Enjoy nature at Kings Park & Botanic Gardens
Six million people visit Kings Park each year, and its easy to see why – it’s one of the most family-friendly locations in the city. The park boasts beautiful botanic gardens, bushland walking trails and green parklands perfect picnics and family activities. There are also several playgrounds to choose from for the kids, including the May Drive Parkland where children can play in the footprints of dinosaurs, or the Rio Tinto Naturescape which offers picturesque outdoor play. Families can also walk among the treetops on the Lotterywest Federation Walkway.
Head to Elizabeth Quay
The new waterfront precinct that is Elizabeth Quay has got something for the entire family. For the kids, there is the BHP Billiton Water Park to run around on a hot day, a nature-inspired playground featuring natural materials that encourages creative play, and maritime-inspired playground with a sand-pit, climbing ropes, “walk the plank” and slides. Local gelateria Gusto Gelato is also on hand to satisfy the young ones while the adults can take their pick from eateries like The Reveley, The Island or The Oyster Bar offering local cuisine with views over the Swan River. Don't forget to stop by the beautiful Elizabeth Quay Carousel while you're at the Quay as well.
Go on the self-guided Heart of Gold tour
The Heart of Gold is an interactive guided trail that takes you back to WA’s early gold rushes of the 1800’s, all the way to today’s world-class gold mines. The tour covers 11 historical landmarks including the Perth Mint and the Golden Eagle in Elizabeth Quay, over an easy 2.5km. The app can be downloaded for free, with the tour including augmented reality games, fun widgets, historical photos and exclusive audio stories. The tour is fascinating for the whole family, showing how gold changed the cityscape and secured the economic future of WA and the rest of the nation.
