80 larger-than-life silk lanterns have landed in Perth: here’s everything to know about the Lanterns of Terracotta Warriors

If you’ve wandered through the City lately, you may have spotted a few visitors popping up in some very unexpected places. From Forrest Place to Barrack Square, across to South Perth and now Elizabeth Quay – the Lanterns of Terracotta Warriors have officially taken over our City. And trust us, you do not want to miss them!

Council House

These dazzling silk lanterns bring the legend of Emperor Qin Shi Huang to life in the most magical way, glowing in bold reds, yellows, blues, greens and bright white. Originally unveiled in Beijing in 2008, these vibrant lanterns have been globe-trotting ever since, captivating crowds wherever they go.

The Lanterns of Terracotta Warriors blend centuries-old Chinese lantern-making craftsmanship with the iconic forms of the Terracotta Warriors, creating a spectacle that feels both ancient and ultra-modern. Designed by talented artists from Beijing’s Chaoyang District Cultural Centre, the lanterns fuse symbolism and contemporary creativity to offer a dazzling prelude to the blockbuster Terracotta Warriors: Legacy of the First Emperor exhibition.

After their journey around the City, the warriors are now lighting up the floating stage at Elizabeth Quay until Wednesday 26 November. Next, they’ll march back to their WA Museum home as part of the Christmas Lights Trail from 29 November to 31 December – making them the ultimate festive photo-op.

The City of Perth is proud to be a Major Partner of the Terracotta Warriors: Legacy of the First Emperor exhibition, currently on display at WA Museum Boola Bardip until 22 February. With more than 225 artefacts - including newly discovered pieces making their global debut - it’s an experience history lovers and curious explorers won’t want to miss.
