‘Tis the season to be jolly, especially with the arrival of summer, the Christmas Lights Trail going up around Perth CBD and some absolutely great concerts bookending 2022. The hottest gigs I can’t pass up feature local artists who push the creative envelope, hard rock legends flipping the script and of course, a couple of cheeky Christmas carols. So this silly season, take care of yourself and each other, enjoy a well-earned break these holidays and say goodbye to 2022 with some of Australia’s finest artists.

MOANA

Badlands Bar

Coming off the back of a WAM song nomination, evocative artisans MOANA are heading to the Badlands cavern to grace the stage with their wickedly psychedelic, feverish music. Embracing elements of performance art, MOANA's music is grandiose and hypnotic. This isn’t pop, it’s music that wants to settle into your bones. Fronted by Moana Mayatrix with Willow Fearns and Lochlan Hoffman this trio give epic performances. Rounding out the massive night will be mates Grunge Barbie and Goodbye Forever.

The Angels - Symphony of Angels

These may not be your usual Christmas Angels but Aussie rock legends The Angels have always been rule-breakers. The band are finally heading to WA to play their rescheduled gig which is a glorious celebration of musicianship. Billed as the merging of classic rock and classical music, the band will display their usual frenetic energy but channel that into the power of an orchestra. It will be a celebration and if you have little rock fans, then this might be the gig for them to experience the power and excellence of Aussie rock.

Lo - Shy Panic Tour

If you love dreamy indie-pop that wraps around you like silk or if you need a gig that will ease you into the silly season, you couldn’t do much better than Perth’s own Lo. You may be familiar with her as one half of the band Flossy but with the release of the sublime “Floating” in 2019, Lo has been carving her lane with music that has caught the attention of Triple J and Pheobe Bridgers. This year she partnered up with SameSame Records and released her EP Shy Panic, which she will now present in all its glory at The Bird. Supported by Anna Schneider and Surf Shop Cops, this gig is a secret gem.

Libby Hammer Quintet Christmas Show

If you think Christmas carols are boring, stodgy songs that are likely to put you to sleep into 2023, then you haven’t been to Libby Hammer’s Christmas shows. The local jazz legend will be melting frosty hearts with her playful Christmas shows that are promised to be filled with delightfully uplifting renditions of Christmas classics with a sprightly jazz spin. Joining her with be her band of players, Alistair McEvoy (saxophone), Chris Foster (piano), Nick Abbey (bass) and Micheal Perkins (drums) to bring in that Yuletide charm.

Kids Christmas Cushion Concert with Libby Hammer

Adults don’t all get to have all the fun, Libby will also be hosting a children’s Christmas Show featuring Mister Jazzcat and band playing all the best sing-a-long songs for kids and the young at heart. Carols like “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer”, “Santa Is Coming To Town” and “Jingle Bells” will be performed and whilst singing is encouraged, dancing may also be mandatory. If you have kids, especially around 4-7, this is the perfect way to kick off the Christmas weekend. And word has it that a very special guest will be dropping in to say hello.

Factory Summer - Various Artists

The colossal juggernaut that is the Ice Cream Factory Summer Festival kicks off its season from 2nd December until 2nd January featuring an irresistible lineup of artists. Check out fan favourite Hot Dub Time Machine on 16 December or Peking Duk on Christmas Eve. But for my money you don’t want to miss three of Australia’s best artists, Cosmo’s Midnight on 28th December and Vera Blue and Holy Holy on 8th December.
