Aboriginal Ceremonies have taken place in Perth for centuries and luckily for us, they remain alive and continue to be practised today. It is a privilege to experience, and even participate in these highly spiritual Ceremonies that local Traditional Owners generously share in spectacular locations throughout Perth.

The development of new and exciting Aboriginal tourism and cultural experiences in the City of Perth and day trip destinations have opened up a world of opportunity to learn and marvel at the amazing spiritual connection Perth’s first people, the Whadjuk People of the Nyoongar Nation have with their Country and the natural environment around them.

We ventured out on tour to discover what significance these age-old Aboriginal Ceremonies held and where they are taking place.

Welcome to Country

A 'Welcome to Country' is a tribal welcome performed by an Aboriginal Elder. It was practised for thousands of years when one Aboriginal community sought permission to enter another community's traditional land. Today, the important ceremony continues and can be experienced in a range of formats including speech, acknowledgement, singing, dancing, storytelling and alongside other related Ceremonies.
The Ceremonies recognise Aboriginal people as the first custodians of the land, promotes awareness of the history and culture of Aboriginal people, and formally acknowledges their ongoing connection to Country.

Smoking Ceremony

A ritual performed by a fire-maker, the Smoking Ceremony is often delivered as part of a Welcome to Country. A fire is lit, smouldering various native plants to produce smoke that has cleansing properties and wards off bad spirits. Participants are typically encouraged to walk through the smoke to be cleansed and to receive heartfelt blessings of well being, which are offerings the Aboriginal people make to their guests on Country.

Sand and Water Ceremony

Sand and Water Ceremonies are a traditional Nyoongar ritual undertaken prior to accessing a river, lake or the sea. By holding some sand from the foreshore of the waterbody, participants are guided to release the sand into the water to let the Waugal (a snake or rainbow serpent in Aboriginal Dreamtime), know of your presence. The Waugal is recognised as the giver of life, maintaining all fresh water sources. This ritual is a show of respect and care for Country and the cultural landscape.
