Perth is a hotbed of artistic talent and 2022 looks set to be a bumper year for our artists and musicians. If you’re a fan of classical music, ballet and opera then we’ve got the lowdown on the most exciting events coming up over the next twelve months.

Koort Boodja (Heartlands)

Saturday 19 February, 7pm

Perth Concert Hall
Conductor Samuel Parry leads the West Coast Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus in this celebration of all things First Nations and Country. The highlight looks set to be a performance of two original songs by Noongar singer Natasha Eldridge, and guest oboist Alexandra Allan featuring in Graeme Koehne’s stunning Way Out West.

WACA Grounds
WA Opera make the most of the steamy Perth summer nights to present this outdoor performance of Bizet’s iconic opera Carmen. Featuring over 150 musicians and singers from the West Australian Opera Chorus, the WAO Children's Chorus and WASO this tale of love, jealousy and passion comes to life under the stars.

WA Youth Orchestra and WASO join forces to perform John Luther Adams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning epic Become Ocean, live for the first time in Australia as part of Perth Festival.

Asher Fisch conducts The Rite of Spring

Friday 11 and Saturday 12 March, 7:30pm

Stravinsky’s innovative and powerful The Rite of Spring is brought to life by WASO conducted by Asher Fisch. The program will also feature WASO Principal Flute Andrew Nicholson performing Jacques Ibert’s Flute Concerto and opens with Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony.

Vivaldi’s Four Seasons

Friday 1 and Saturday 2 April, 7:30pm

Despite the date, this is no April Fool, as WASO take on Vivaldi’s iconic and timeless ode to the changing seasons. If that isn’t enough for you, Haydn’s moving Farewell Symphony and Handel’s magnificent Water Music Suite also feature in this performance led by WASO Concertmaster Laurence Jackson.

Wednesday 6 to Saturday 9 April, 7:30pm

His Majesty’s Theatre
In this world premiere WA Opera joins forces with the vision impaired community of Perth to take the audience on a journey into the lived experience of those with vision impairment through this new version of Tchaikovsky’s last opera told from the point of view of Iolanta.

Handel’s Messiah

Wednesday 13 April, 7:30pm

Perth Concert Hall
Would it even be Easter without a performance of Handel’s Messiah? Conductor Joseph Nolan takes up the baton to bring together WASO, the St. George’s Cathedral Consort and acclaimed soloists Sara Macliver, Fiona Campbell, Paul McMahon and James Clayton in this classic piece of music.

Follow the White Rabbit down into Wonderland as WA Ballet bring this enchanting tale to life. Septime Webre’s popular take on this classic story features a mix of ballet, puppetry and theatre that makes this fun for all the family.

This world premiere brings together Bach’s iconic Baroque masterpiece and Natalie Weir’s choreography, ballet and music combine to create this exploration of partnership, human connection and the beauty of motion.

Bohemian Rhapsodies

Friday 11 and Saturday 12 November, 7:30pm

Perth Concert Hall
Join WASO for an evening of music from around the world taking in Mozart’s Haffner Symphony, Smetana’s Vltava and Janáček’s Taras Bulba. To top it all off WASO’s Principal Trumpet – and fastest fingers in the west – Brent Grapes will be tonguing his way through the premiere of Nigel Westlake’s Trumpet Concerto.

His Majesty’s Theatre
WA Ballet set Tchaikovsky’s classic in 1880s Fremantle Harbour and weave in ancient music and dance performed by Noongar artists in this truly unforgettable world premiere performance.
